About This Item

Privately Printed, 1962. Good. February, 1962 University of Maryland Humor Magazine: The Old Line. Notorious Valentine's Day issue, which triggered the University of Maryland Faculty Senate Committee to threaten to shut the magazine down if it didn't "dress up" the material - that is, stop stressing "sex, drinking and sick humor." Aptly enough, legendary Tony Award winning Broadway producer Ken Waissman (Grease, Over There, etc.) was then a student at UM and Editor-in-Chief of The Old line - and thus largely responsible for the objectionable content. The issue also featured Waissman cover art on both front covers, the first cover an illustration of Cupid drawing his bow to shoot an ostensibly unattractive young lady, the second cover depicting the same lady flat on her back shot dead through the heart, Cupid grinning menacingly nearby. (See attached images.) Contents also include Waissman's breezy editorial column, "From the Garbage Can," his full-page cartoon and a full-page photo of Waissman with bow in hand loaded with plunger instead of an arrow, flanked by two campus beauties. Includes numerous off-color articles and jokes. Densely illustrated with cartoons and period ads. Scarce. 32 pp. 11 1/2" x 9". Tight, unmarked copy with minimal wrinkling to upper portions of leaves. Photographs of or additional information about this item are available on request. All inquiries answered promptly.
