SCARCE EARLY MONOGRAPH ON ANATOMY OF THE ORANGUTAN WITH SUPERB LITHOGRAPHS OF BELOVED RESIDENTS OF PARIS ZOO.

24x32 cm folio hardcover, 3/4 leather binding, spine with gilt compartments and gilt title, marbled paper covered boards, marbled endpapers, bookplate of academic physician to front paste-down, pp. 32-118, 5 full page lithographic plates, 2 are color portraits of two orangutans represented also in text-figures. Corners bumped, title page has abrasions from removal of inscriptions and 3x6 cm repaired area to right edge not affecting text, top 1-2 cn corner of 2 rear endpapers missing. Text and plates unmarked, very good in custom archival mylar cover. This important early monograph on the orangutan documents the internal and external anatomy of two primates from the zoological garden in the Bois de Boulogne. In addition to the fine lithographic plates, there are superb drawings in the text of Maurice and Max in life at the zoo, all by museum illustrator Adolphe Millot.

ALPHONSE MILNE-EDWARDS (1835 - 1900) a French zoologist, obtained a medical degree in 1859 and became assistant to his father at the Jardin des Plantes in 1876. He became the director the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in 1891, devoting himself especially to fossil birds and deep-sea exploration. He was a member of the Société Philomathique de Paris, French Academy of Sciences, Russian Academy of Sciences, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and Zoological Society of London.

ADOLPHE PHILIPPE MILLOT (1857–1921) was a French painter, lithographer and entomologist who was the senior illustrator at Muséum national d'histoire naturelle. He was a member of the Salon des Artistes Francaise.
