Oxford University Press, 1906. Hardcover. Good. 1906. First Edition Thus. 427 pages. No dust jacket. Green cloth with gilt lettering. Minor staining and tanning to pages. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers, as well as title pages. Hinges are lightly cracked but boards remain firmly attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild rubbing and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.
Synopsis
The hero of Charlotte Bronte's first novel escapes a dreary clerkship in industrial Yorkshire by taking a job as a teacher in Belgium. There, however, his entanglement with the sensuous but manipulative Zoraide Reuter, complicates his affections for a penniless girl who is both teacher and pupil in Reuter's school.
