Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion. 206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist. This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of the year there is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to escape the bitter temperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him with a visit and two lusty broods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to prove it, and the illustrations by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing." Minor very soft crease, faint pencil erasure marks and previous owner's embossed blind stamp on front free endpaper; small light crease at bottom corner of half-title page; very minor edgewear; minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has one small closed tear, one tiny tear, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing, minor soiling, small area of delamination at bottom of front panel at flap-fold, a few tiny dints on hinges - mainly rear hinge - now protected in removable mylar sleeve. Very Good/Very Good.

Slight wear to spine ends, inscription to browned ffep, else a beautifully bright copy Murray, an American clergyman became as "Adirondack Murray" after a series of works which popularized the Adirondack area in Upstate New York. An impassioned outdoorsman, Murray was an early advocate for the conservation movement and promoted health and well being by immersing oneself in nature. So popular indeed were his articles on the Adirondacks, people flocked in droves from the city to get out into nature. It is said that the term "vacation" came about from this movement from the city to the wilderness. In this book he travels by railroad along the North-West coast of America and British Columbia. Description:
U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC, 1894. Hardcover. Fair Condition/No Dust Jacket. This book details a wealth of information on the geology of several regions of the United States, most notably Washington, the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Lakes. It is filled with maps and other illustrations. The text is a strange mix, with the majority in English, but a substantial amount in French as well. I can't find a pattern in this, and it is not simply a bilingual printing. Size: 4mo - over 9 3/4" - 12" tall. 529 pp. A few marks on the endpapers, but the core text pages are tight and clean. Front board is literally hanging on by a thread, and should be considered detached. The spine covering is broken in several places and is also in imminent danger of being lost. However, the binding remains tight, and al pages are in very good condition. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 5-6 pounds. Category: Natural History & Resources; Non-English Language::French;…

Illustrated, pp xiv, 609, the much scarcer variant with plain endpapers, green cloth in very good condition, an excellent as new copy, in a dustwrapper with a slightly marked spine and a very tiny nick at the spine head. [Trees are wildlife just as deer or primroses are wildlife. Each species has its own agenda and its own interactions with human activities. This 100th volume of the New Naturalist series presents a landmark in natural history publishing. Looking at such diverse evidence as the woods used in buildings and ships, and how woodland has been portrayed in pictures and photographs, Rackham reconstructs British woodland through the ages. Aimed at the non-specialist, New Naturalist Woodlands investigates what woods are and how they function. In lively style, Rackham takes us through: How woods evolved and how they are managed, the basic botany (understanding roots, partnerships, longevity, tree-rings), outline of woodland history,…
