London: William Heinemann 1905, 2nd printing. (Small 4to) 57pp. plus mounted plates. Very good, no dust jacket. Rebacked with the original gilt decorated green cloth and part of the original spine over a new spine and corners. 51 mounted color plates with captioned tissue guards, edges stained green, plates mounted on green art paper. Some foxing to title page and following few pages, and also to the tissue guards. Plates are clean. Illustrations by Arthur Rackham. (Juvenile).
Synopsis
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow first appeared in a story collection by Irving called The Sketch-Book Of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. This first classic collection of American short stories also featured the popular Rip Van Winkle . The fantastical portions of Irving's works were inspired not only by his travels around Europe and hearing old folk tales and mythology, but also by a visit to upstate New York in the Catskill Mountains as a youth. His exposure to the old Dutch customs and ghost stories around Tarrytown, New York planted the seeds for his Headless Horseman character.
