Boston: Ticknor and Co, 1885. Hardcover. Fair +. [4], 515 p.; 20 cm. Green cloth with embossed gilt spine and cover titles with black decoration. Publisher's advertisement for other works by the author on page facing title page. Light green endpapers. Former owner's dated signature on front fixed endpaper: "William Theodore Peters 1887." With his small armorial engraved bookplate with motto: "Sans Dieu Rien." Attached to the front free endpaper is a circular portrait of the author William D. Howells, cut out of a catalog or magazine, possibly by Peters. William Theodore Peters (1862-1904) was an American poet and actor who spent his most of his career in Europe, dying in Paris. In Fair+ Condition: cocked; loss at ends of spine and along back joint; cover is soiled; corners are heavily rubbed; occasional light soiling on pages.
