  • Used
Cairo, Egypt,: 1894., 1894. 2 volumes. [23; 19] ff. 160 original photographs [vol. I]; 120 original photographs [vol. II]. Each photo measures 4.5 x 35 inches; many photos are faded, whereas others are strong, a couple of photos were defaced with ink doodles. Original full brown morocco, with tooling, with the title "SNAPSHOTS EGYPT 1894 – VOL. I [& II]". Very good condition. 280 PHOTOGRAPHS RECORDING A VISIT TO EGYPT IN 1894: Each photograph is carefully labeled and annotated in ink, English. The album records photographically the touring holiday in Egypt, from arrival to departure, of an unnamed older man husband and two women (related?) who record scenes, from Alexandria, to the monuments in Gizeh, Beni-Hasan, Luxor, Karnak, Thebes, Kom Ombo, Assuan, Shellal, Mahadah, Philae, Wadi-Halfa, and Abu-Sir. / The photographs are all the same size (4.5x3.5 inches), with four pictures mounted per page. Many of the photographs have faded over time and many are well preserved. The strength of the album are the numerous images taken of the Egyptian peoples encountered in their journey, including some of their guides and guards. There are a total of 280 mounted photographs, by far the greater number are carefully annotated with inscriptions, sometimes rather candidly. Approximately three photographs are defaced with child-like doodles. This is a rich resource of original, unique photographs all taken during the three-some's 1894 journey [from England] to Egypt. The names of the tourists (an older bearded man, 2 ladies – seem to be related) is never mentioned. [A list of the photo titles is also available].

Description:
[Np: The Photographer, ca. 1963].. Two original glossy double-weight gelatin silver prints from negatives, 11 x 14" (inclusive of margins). Captioned in pencil on verso. About fine. Original prints of two of the most memorable of the sequence of superb photographs taken by Yousuf Karsh on location in South Africa during the filming of the 1964 Diamond Films production, ZULU, directed by Cy Endfield. Karsh's invitation to join the production and photograph the cast and locale resulted in a sequence of photographs of a very high order. The present images are an extraordinary pair of photographs, one from a near face-on p.o.v., the other from right profile, of a large group of Zulu tribesmen, in warrior regalia, seated and watching a motion picture (in the first of the images the 16mm projector is visible in the background). The expressions of wonder and amusement are matchless. The pencil caption on the verso reads of the first reads: "The Zulus watched a western movie at dusk outdoors in the… Read More

Famous and last portrait of the poet by Otto in preparation for his candidacy for the French Academy

Paul Verlaine commissioned the photographer to take a series of portraits when he considered applying for the Académie Française. Several tests are then carried out.
For these photographs, the poet poses with the famous scarf of the house Charvet, which had been given to him by Robert de Montesquiou.
Three years before his death, the poet appears the Socratic face, the hunchbacked forehead, his gaze sunk under the eyebrow arch, sporting the chamaré scarf of which he was so proud.
This portrait is one of the most famous of the poet, it is presented here in a remarkable state of preservation.

Description:
[San Francisco]: [Probably Taber Photo], 1880. Ephemera. Near fine. An imperial plate (8-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches) image "made on the path leading from Hutchings's Upper House hotel to his residence a few hundred yards north of the hotel, north of present-day Sentinel Bridge," Naef and Hult-Lewis, p. 90. Watkins took this image between 1878 and 1881. It may have been printed by Isaiah Taber, after Taber took over Watkins's bankrupt photo studio. However, it does not have the Taber imprint but the mount matches another Yosemite image with Taber's logo in the negative. This view is very similar to one of Watkins's mammoth-plate images (Naef and Hult-Lewis, Carleton Watkins: The Complete Mammoth Photographs, no. 200) and was almost certainly taken at the same time. In addition to the albumen print offered here, another example of this imperial plate image is in the Yosemite Museum, on a larger mount. While it is generally known that Watkins regularly took his 18-by-22-inch mammoth glass-plate camera and… Read More

Description:
Washington, DC: Library of Congress, 1980. Photograph. Fine. In this widely reproduced Lange image, a bulky white man appears to hold court while standing with one foot on the bumper of a car; five thin black men sit and stand behind him on the steps of a clapboard store. In the years immediately after she made the negative, this was one of Lange's most reproduced images: it appeared in U.S. Camera Annual 1939, Richard Wright's 12 Million Black Voices (1941), and Archibald MacLeish's Land of the Free (1938). Most of the time, when this image is reproduced, the glimpse of a young white man holding a cigarette, which appears on the left edge, is cropped out. Lange took this image while working for the Resettlement Administration and the Farm Security Administration (two WPA agencies). The most famous image from this period in her career is Migrant Mother, the iconic Depression-era photograph. Lange's images from this era often have descriptive names rather than titles, and they have changed over… Read More

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are… Read More
