About This Item

London: Roc, 1993. First U.K. Edition. An outrageous combination of cyberpunk tropes, sophisticated linguistics theory, and postmodernist satire, Snow Crash is set in a near-future America where government has broken down and just about everything is done by franchise. The main character, Hiro Protagonist, a.k.a. the Deliverator, is a genius hacker and samurai warrior, but he makes his living delivering pizzas for the Mafia. When a deadly disease, the snow crash virus, begins to take out hackers and threatens virtual reality itself, Hiro is the man to tame it" (Barron, Anatomy of Wonder II-1077). A key work in the cyberpunk genre, nominated for both the British Science Fiction Association Award and Arthur C. Clarke Award. First Impression, a trade paperback original. Octavo (21.75cm); original pictorial card wrappers; [iv],440,[4]pp. A few pinpoint rubbed spots, trivial wear to heel, else very Near Fine, appearing unread, and without the usual toning to the text edges.

Synopsis

Snow Crash is Neal Stephenson's third novel, published in 1992. Like many of Stephenson's other novels it references history, linguistics, anthropology, archaeology, religion, computer science, politics, cryptography, and philosophy. Stephenson explained the title of the novel in his 1999 essay In the Beginning... was the Command Line as his term for a particular software failure mode on the early Apple Macintosh computer.

Reviews

On Nov 11 2019, a reader said:
In one of the most perceivable dystopian futures that I can imagine, Hiro is everything.

Honestly, I'm not looking for the money. I am registering an amount because your own review of this book captures the fine points so well. Neal Stevenson's writing in Snow Crash is so visceral and complex, that you have no choice but to become immersed in the world he creates. It fires your brain for weeks after the read, if not longer. It takes time to wrap one's head around his world and language, and his execution is flawless.

This book is at pleat as important as Stranger in a Strange Land.
