About This Item

New York: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1974. First American Edition . Hardcover (with Dust Jacket). Very Good. A celebratory biography of Sam Houston, “potential squaw man, soldier in the War of 1812, impoverished school teacher, frontier lawyer, United States Congressman, [and] Governor of Texas... before he reached the age of forty.” His political career ruined by a marital scandal, the promising Houston retreated into alcoholism and abandoned civilization to live with the Indians before his fortune became linked to the “liberation” of the state of Texas. A good copy in slightly worn, chipped dust jacket, gilt lettering on spine bright but upside down, publisher’s press release laid in (344 pages, notes, selected bibliography, index).
