About This Item

London: Printed and Sold by James Phillips, 1776. 1st ed. Hardcover. Very Good. 204p. Rebound in 20th buckram. 15 cm. Scattered foxing/spotting. A couple leaves have modest chips or tears in right margin. Reckitt was an English Quaker and traveling minister. Most of this account deals with his travels to visit Quakers in Colonial American. He captured quickly by the French in 1756 on his first attempt to go to America and was detained for about 6 months at Morlaix. His second attempt to go to America in 1757 was more successful. He visited Quakers from Boston to parts of Virginia and Maryland and many points in between. He seems to have spent quite a bit of his time in Pennsylvania. He mentions at least a couple of meetings with Native Americans, one of which meetings was held on Nantucket. Reckitt was captured again, this time in 1759 by a privateer out of Martinico (Martinique) while on board a vessel heading for Barbados. After a brief captivity on Martinique, Reckitt was taken to St. Christopher's (Saint Kitts). After spending time on Saint Kitts and Nevis (and perhaps elsewhere), Reckitt returned to Philadelphia at the end of November, 1759. He departed for England the following month and arrived in London on January 29, 1760.
