About This Item

John Murray, 1853. Hardback. Good. 1st Edition: xvi, 417pp, illustrated, 11 illustrations of which 4 lithographic plates (3 tinted), 1 coloured folding map. [MISSING the lithographic frontispiece] . Rebound, contemporary half leather with bluse marbled boards, gilt ruling and titling to spine. A rare and very important book on the expedition led by T.E.L. Moore on the Brigg Plover in search of Sir John Franklin. The expedition, in which Hooper participated as a marine officer, was forced to winter in Providence-Bay, where Hooper could gather an enormous wealth of useful information on the Tuski. When the ship was free of ice, Hooper joined Pullen's boat expedition along the arctic north coast of America to the Mackenzie River and Cape Bathurst. In summer 1850 the expedition crossed the northenmost part of Canada and returned to England. - Henze II, 622/23. The book also contains information on the culture of the North Alaska Esquimaux and the Tuski. Hooper travelled aboard the Plover as Acting mate with the British Naval Franklin Search Expedition from Plymouth (1848-52) under Captain T.E.L. Moore. The expedition was sent by the Admiralty to serve as a search and supply ship for John Franklin's Northwest Passage Expedition (1845-48) and to assist with Henry Kellett's ship Herald of the British Naval Franklin Search Expedition (1848-50). The Plover over-wintered in 1848-49 in a small bay on the Siberian coastline near a Chukchi village, and enjoyed excellent relations with the Natives. Hooper's detailed descriptions of the customs, dwellings, clothing and beliefs of the Chukchis and adjacent North Alaskan Eskimos are complemented in his narrative by colour plates illustrative of the people and their ways of life. The following spring, W.J.S. Pullen and Hooper embarked on a coastal exploration of the region between Wainwright Inlet and Mackenzie River for traces of the Franklin Expedition. [AB 7395]. Covers heavily worn, front hinge beginning to split, some leather missing from corners and spine. Previous owners signature on fep, pages age toned,p415 split in hinge, some minor foxing but overall a nice clean copy. Good. PLEASE NOTE: This book will incur extra postage and insurance charges.
