About This Item

London : Printed by J.Nichols for T. Cadell, 1784 A fair copy of the 1st edition in 2 volumes in contemporary full leather binding. William Coxe travelled extensively throughout Europe in his role as a tutor and companion. His account is detailed and comprehensive. This copy is in contemporary full calf with title and volume labels to spine and elaborate gilt compartments. The boards have gilt ruled lines to edges. The binding has very weak spine joints with splitting to all. The spine to Vol II has a vertical crease. The boards are still attached, but repair is needed. The boards are very clean with only minor scuffing. Corners are rubbed with light leather loss. Contents - Vol I: title page; dedication; preface 2pp; subscribers' list 6pp; contents 4pp; half title; fold out map of Poland; text pp 3-236 with 3 plates; half title; fold out map of Russia; text pp 239-588 with fold out plans of Moscow and St Petersburg, specimen letter, and 3 plates; appendix 589-590. Vol II: title page; contents list 4pp; half title; text pp 3-312 with 2 text engravings, 2 plates and 2 charts; Travels into Sweden pp 313-513 with fold out map of Southern provinces of Sweden, a plan of Stockholm, a folding plan of the Canal of Trolhaetta, and 3 plates; Travels into Denmark pp 514-599, with folding map,and folding plans of Copenhagen and the Canal of Kiel, Appendix 1 pp 600-611; Index and Errata to both volumes pp 613-632. The contents are clean and maps and plates are in very good condition. Both volumes have an ink signature to the top of the title page. There is some light creasing on some folded plates. There is some brown spotting - particularly in Vol I where some sections are more prone and occasional offsetting. Most spotting or toning is confined to the top page margin and is probably soot related. There is a small repaired edge tear to the side margin of p 433, and a small ink mark in the gutter of p 280 in Vol I. Vol II has less spotting. Pages 409, 412, 413 and 416 are lightly printed. Please enquire if you would like additional images to better assess condition.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
