About This Item

London: Chapman and Hall, 1877. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. The bright-red buckram cloth covers indicating ex-library status belie the original interior published in 1877 and that is festooned with some lovely black-and-white engravings hors-text and additional duotone engravings on plates, done by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, of Dublin. Red-speckled page edges. Withdrawn from the Leeds public library, a fine bookplate inside front flap denoting so, and with ink-stamp denoting such inside rear flap at bottom and embossed stamps at title page and over tips of engraved plates, unobtrusive. Cracking to gutter of a pastedown, else quite sturdy. First Edition. xix [3], 406, [2] pp. + 82 pp. of publisher's advertisements. Nine lovely plates that are done by the so-called Woodbury process developed by Walter Woodbury, a photographic frontis, says a Wikipedia article about it, that "is both a printing process and the print that it produces. In technical terms, the process is a photomechanical rather than a photographic one, because sensitivity to light plays no role in the actual printing. The process produces very high quality continuous tone images in monochrome, with surfaces that show a slight relief effect." Indeed. A fine Woodbury Process-produced portrait of the author at frontis, opposite title page.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
