About This Item
London: John Calder, 1963-64. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. The first U.K. editions of Henry Miller's two autobiographical novels, controversial works which were banned in the U.S. The first U.K. editions, first impressions. In the original unclipped dust wrappers. All three of these works had first been published by the Obelisk Press in the 1930s, due to the obscenity laws in the States at the time, which resulted in the works being banned in the country. These are the first U.K. editions published, after copies of the Obelisk Press edition had been smuggled in to the country. In the 1960s Scotland Yard debated banning the publication of the book, however they decided to publish, as eminent literary figures were publicly defending the book. Among the works defenders was T. S. Eliot.'Tropic of Cancer' is a novel regarded now as an important work in twentieth century literature, notorious for its candid sexuality. 'Tropic of Capricorn' is likewise a semi-autobiographical novel which acts as a prequel to 'Cancer'.By Arthur Miller, an American author who was known for breaking with the literary forms of the day and developing anew type of semi-autobiographical novel. In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, smart. Marks to the front board of 'Capricorn'. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities of 'Capricorn'. Front board of 'Capricorn' is a little bowed. 'Cancer' dust wrapper is edge worn with a few light marks. Dust wrapper of 'Capricorn' is heavily edge worn with chips and closed tears. Marks to the dust wrapper of 'Capricorn', heavier to the front wrap, with loss. Small label to the front fly leaf of 'Capricorn'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good
