Barol Guyrgieuvits was a 16th-century Croatian historian who is primarily remembered for his written histories of Croatian music and ceremonial arts. Gyurgieuvits lived as an Ottoman slave for 13 years, a period which allowed him to gain substantial understanding of the culture. In his book 'De Turcarum ritu et caeremonis', Gyurgieuvits describes Ottoman customs and culture and is known to be one of the first books to describe the music of Turkish ceremonies. First published in 1544, this book included a Croatian vocabulary dictionary with French and Latin translations.
