Orig. published in 1896, with the first English translation in 1898, this book is reissued now (1960) as Vol. No. 51 in the Library of Liberal Arts series, translated from the original Russian by Aylmer Maude, with an Introduction by Brown U. philosophy professor Vincent Tomas, who states that it "remains one of the most vigorous attacks upon formalism & the doctrine of art for art's sake ever written." In 213 pages. Softcover book has cream-colored wrappers with brown lettering to front & spine. Condition is VG-/G+: exterior darkening & soiling, sticker residue to top upper-outer corner of front cover, slight tearing where front cover meets spine at bottom, slight chipping to mid & head of spine. Interior is very clean, binding strong & straight, pages moderately tanned but completely unmarked.
