London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1858. First edition. First edition. 8vo. 323pp. Original blind-stamped olive green cloth. The first edition of George MacDonald's first story to be published in book form. A fine copy in its original state, finely blind-stamped olive cloth with diamond shaped central blossoms and petal motif, elaborate borders on both covers, spine with gilt stamped leaf emblem and lettering, original yellow endpapers. MacDonald's faerie romance was aimed at an adult audience. The similarities between MacDonald and Lewis Carroll, who published Alice in Wonderland eight years later abound, culminating with Carroll asking MacDonald and his wife to read the draft of Alice. About as fine a copy as ever seen by this enduring and important classic. The copy of Sir Charles Oman (inscribed) ,noted military historian, and later, John Sparrow, English academic and book collector, both bookplates appear at front. In superb custom made chemise and green morocco-backed slipcase.

Bound in contemporary half-leather binding over marbled paper covered boards, with all edges marbled and marbled endsheets; binder's stamp of Mudie to verso of front free endpaper. Near Fine with light rubbing to bindings, spines slightly sunned, foxing to pages and former owner name to front blank of each volume. A Victorian tripple-Decker in lovely contemporary binding. Although this novel initially received mixed reviews upon publication, it is now considered a major work of 19th-century literature.

At the end of November 1803, the Teyler's Religious Society in Haarlem organized a competition. Lino prints enhanced with acrylic inks and paints. Includes two original carved blocks of the prints adhered to the interior of the box. Signed and numbered by the artist McCallion has handwritten the text of Poe's short story "The Cask of Amontillado". The text is accompanied by McCallion's original artwork. Poe's short story is a revenge plot with the resulting punishment.  McCallion's lino cuts begin with the narrator meeting his "friend" Fortunato on the street at Carnival time. He lures Fortunato to test a cask of Amontillado. Our next image is of the long and winding spiraling staircase that Fortunato descends to the catacombs (the next lino image). Fred De Fau & Company. New York. 1902. LIMITED EDITION. One of 1,000 numbered sets, this number 942. 10 volumes. 8vo. (7.7 x 5.5 inches). Finely bound by Brentanos in contemporary half tan morocco. Each spine with five raised bands, decorated with gilt piping. Compartments multi ruled and lettered in gilt and with blind tooled centre decorations. Marbled paper on boards. Gold on grey marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt, the others untrimmed and a few gatherings still unopened. Illustrated with decorative head and tail pieces, vignettes in the text and multiple full page black and white illustrations by F. S. Coburn throughout. Each frontis plate protected with a printed descriptive tissue guards. Title pages printed in red and black. Pages nice and clean throughout. There is some minor bumping and rubbing to the corners of the bindings and a couple of small scratches to the lower board of volume 9 but overall this is a near fine, handsome set in excellent condition that looks wonderful on the shelf.

The five famous Christmas stories uniformly bound in full red leather trimmed in gilt, raised bands trimmed and decorated in gilt. All edges trimmed in gilt. 'Carol' is the thirteenth edition. The four additional stories are all First Editions. The Chimes, published in 1845 by Chapman & Hall; The Battle of Life, published by Bradbury & Evans in 1846; The Cricket on The Hearth, published by Bradbury & Evans in 1846; and The Haunted Man, published by Bradbury & Evans in 1848. A copies are near fine with publishing dates at the base of the spine. Five of Dickens' Christmas stories, all but one (Carol) a first edition.
