Rare books from Arthur Fournier Fine & Rare

Illustrated poster with exhibition title and informational texts boldly silkscreened in red ink across a photolithographic facsimile of The New York Times classified ads page W27, dated September 9, 1956, executed on actual newsprint. Exhibition checklist printed on verso.Approx. 22.5 x 15 in.Edition size unknown. Our source for this item tells us it was professionally de-acidified and laid down on ultrathin Japanese mulberry paper using a light application of archival grade, starch-based adhesives. The item is in very good condition overall with insignificant loss of material at the original folds. An notoriously fragile and therefore uncommon poster for the important Schwitters exhibition. Ref. Swann Sale 2346, lot 147 ; MoMA 876.1979. This copy comes to us from the collection of dealer Jean Noel Herlin.

A fascinating set of self-issued books by the author, with texts evoking beat poets of the era, dream journals, and automatic writing. Liebow went on to become a noted San Francisco Gurdjieffian hypnotist and teacher. The present offer includes the first four books he produced under the moniker Harlequin Press, each one limited to 40 copies each. They are in uniformly fine condition.

Illustrated poster, linoleum print in pale yellow and black on tan paper. Approx. 31.5 x 23.75 in. Very good overall, old central folds from previous storage, otherwise well- preserved with only minor handling marks. [1341] Quevedo is a noted Mexican American feminist artist, active as a member of the Taller de Gráfica Popular from 1958 until 1965. The present work depicts an intergeneration image of Mexican women in solidarity for International Women's Day. We have been unable to locate another impression of this delicate print in commerce or institutional collections.

Very good with spare handling marks and a few closed tears (less than 1 in.) at lower margin. Overall, a strikingly well-preserved example of this rare poster commemorating the achievements of Joseph Charles Price. According to Blackpast.org, "Price, founder and first president of Livingston College, in North Carolina, was born free on February 10, 1854 in Elizabeth City, Price studied at St. Cyprian Episcopal School founded for the children of ex-slaves by Boston educators. He later attended Shaw University in Raleigh in 1873 but transferred to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1875. Price graduated as valedictorian in 1879 after winning several oratorical prizes. A breath-taking document of Andy Warhol's creative process at the Factory, circa 1977, including twenty photographs showing Warhol with his own Polaroid camera, shooting images of two unidentified men engaged in acts of an intimate nature for a series known as Sex Parts and Torsos. The other images show the artist mixing and applying pigments in the studio, and cutting red paper, two samples of which are included in the sequence. These six photo-booklets were made by Ronnie Cutrone, Warhol's assistant at the Factory from 1972 until 1980. Indeed. The complete suite of prints does not seem to have appeared at auction in the past several decades.

A fascinating and detailed work concerning the use of cacao in culinary practice, mostly toward the production of chocolate confections including "choco-lait" or milk chocolate, which -- while invented in 1875 -- only rose to wide popularity in the early 20th century. Other recipes given include those for pralines, fondants creme, chocolat a la noisette, and a number of proprietary recipes for chocolate candy shells and coatings. The journal is careful, precise, and shows edits and redactions evidencing experimentation by a skilled chef. Unique.

Includes the seminal 11-page cover story on Basquiat, written by Cathleen McGuigan. "Since I was seventeen, I thought I might be a star. I'd think about all my heroes, Charlie Parker, Jimi Hendrix," he remarks, in McGuigan's story. "I had a romantic feeling of how people had become famous. Even when I didn't think my stuff was that good, I'd have faith." In the eyes of some observers, the piece helped cement Basquiat's reputation in the firmament of the 1980s New York art world.
