Magnífica edição que reúne as gravuras desenhadas por Ali Bei durante as suas viagens pelo Norte de África, Arábia e Ásia Menor, incluindo as primeiras representações artísticas feitas por um ocidental da Ilha de Patmos na Grécia, onde viveu o evangelista S. João, e da cidade de Meca, sendo Ali Bei o terceiro ocidental a visitá-la depois do italiano Domenico di Varthema, em 1503 e do português Pero da Covilhã alguns anos depois. São igualmente notáveis as gravuras da Mesquita de Omar em Jerusalém.

Domingo Francisco Jorge Badía y Leblich (Barcelona, 1767 - Damasco, 1818) foi um militar, espião, arabista e aventureiro espanhol, também conhecido como Alí Bey ou Alí Bey el-Abbassi. Viveu, desde 1778, em Cuevas de Almanzora, Almería, onde se começou a interessar pela cultura muçulmana, estudou árabe em Valência, em 1792 mudou-se para Córdoba e depois, em 1793, para Madrid.

Em 1803, recebeu, de D. Manuel Godoy, Primeiro-ministro de D. Carlos IV, o encargo de realizar viagens por territórios muçulmanos, o que fez disfarçado de Príncipe Sírio descendente da dinastia Abásida.

Depois de visitar Londres para aperfeiçoar os conhecimentos da língua árabe, percorreu Marrocos, Argélia, Líbia e territórios sob o domínio do Império Otomano como o Egipto, Arábia, Síria, Turquia e Grécia. Entre 1808 e 1814 esteve ao serviço do Rei José I, irmão de Napoleão, que tinha sido imposto aos espanhóis como rei. Foi nomeado Alcaide de Córdoba e exerceu estas funções entre 1810 e 1811.

Depois da expulsão dos franceses, em 1813, exilou-se em Paris onde publicou a sua magna obra. Em 1818 viajou até Damasco onde, segundo algumas fontes, foi envenenado pelos serviços secretos britânicos e segundo outras faleceu com disenteria próximo de Meserib.

Magnificent edition joining together the engravings drawn by Ali Bei during his travels through North Africa, Arabia and Asia Minor, including the first artistic representations made by a Westerner of the Island of Patmos in Greece, where the evangelist St John lived, and of the city of Mecca, Ali Bei being the third Westerner to visit it after the Italian Domenico di Varthema in 1503 and the Portuguese Pero da Covilhã a few years later. Also notable are the engravings of the Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem.

Domingo Francisco Jorge Badía y Leblich (Barcelona, 1767 - Damascus, 1818) was a Spanish military man, spy, Arabist and adventurer, also known as Alí Bey or Alí Bey el-Abbassi. He lived, from 1778, in Cuevas de Almanzora, Almería, where he became interested in Muslim culture, studied Arabic in Valencia, in 1792 moved to Cordoba and then, in 1793, to Madrid.

In 1803, he was commissioned by Manuel Godoy, Prime Minister of Charles IV, to undertake journeys through Muslim territories, which he did in the guise of a Syrian prince descended from the Abbasid dynasty.

After visiting London to perfect his knowledge of the Arabic language, he toured Morocco, Algeria, Libya and territories under the rule of the Ottoman Empire such as Egypt, Arabia, Syria, Turkey and Greece. Between 1808 and 1814 he was in the service of King Joseph I, Napoleon"s brother, who had been imposed on the Spanish as king. He was appointed alcalde of Cordoba and held these positions between 1810 and 1811.

After the expulsion of the French in 1813, he went into exile in Paris where he published his magnum opus. In 1818 he travelled to Damascus where, according to some sources, he was poisoned by British intelligence and according to others he died of dysentery near Meserib.
