The publication history of this work is difficult to determine though it would appear to have been published between 1808-1813 and then discontinued. It also seemed to have later assumed the name 'Flora Parisiensis'. This copy includes the half-title page, title page [Flore Parisienne] followed by 32 pages of text and 44 leaves of fine uncoloured stipple-engraved plates. This copy includes the original information slip which states "Les neuf premiers Livraisons renfermeront Les Nos 1-5, 7-10, 13,15, 17-20, 22-26, 28-32, 34, 35, 37-41, 45-53, 59, 61, 68 des Planches. Illustrated with many hundreds of half-page woodcuts. pp (14), 922, (13), the title page is laid down and has slight losses, the next leaf is restored at the corner with no loss of text, the preliminary index is a bit thumbed and marked, a little marginal staining to the last hundred pages, a little marginal staining and marking on occasional pages, but overall very firm and tight and in better condition than many copies. There are very neat early manuscript notes on many pages, mainly limited to the common English names. Contemporary (?) simple lined calf, rebacked and with new endpapers in the early twentieth century, with the original spine laid down. An inked paper title label on the spine. Liverpool: Henry Fisher , 1820 A very good 2 volume set of the 1st edition, newly rebound in half calf with marbled boards. With 2 decorative frontispieces, 1 decorative title, and 106 hand coloured plates. The title pages are undated but Vol I has a preface dated 1820 and the 1st edition was produced between 1816 and 1820. This copy is in new half calf with gilt lines title labels and volume numbers to spines. The marbled paper matches the marbling on the page edges. New endpapers. All the plates are in very good clean condition and are well coloured. The paper quality varies with the paper in the first half of Vol II being noticeably toned and prone to light spotting. Three volumes, small quarto, pp viii, 96, (6); iv, 188; iv, 188, three vignette title pages, an extra hand-coloured title page in the first volume, with 137 fine hand coloured plates, all edges gilt, bound in a Victorian half morocco and cloth, the spines highly decorated in gilt, a little rubbed at the joints and corners, the cloth sides slightly marked and very slightly bubbled in a few small places. In Volume 3 title page and the first two plates and text are a little stained at the upper corner, the subsequent three plates and text pages very faintly marked; otherwise this is a remarkably clean and bright set internally - the plates all have their protective tissues which very occasionally have a faint spot of foxing, but nothing has transfered to the surface of the plate. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1816 A very good 3 volume set in part contemporary half leather binding with 240 plates of which 237 are hand coloured. Duppa (1770-1831) was draughtsman and writer who authored a wide range of works. The bindings have newer spines with raised bands and author and title labels. The boards are marbled and retain their original corners. The spines have become sunned but are sound; corners and edges with wear and varying degrees of surface loss. The books do not lie completely flat when opened. Internally the endpapers are marbled matching the boards. They have the bookplate of Gloria Rollinson. London: Thomas Harper, 1633. Thick square octavo, pp (6), 702, (66), printed in black letter. The title page is mounted and heavily restored from a much earlier time; it is age-toned and there is much staining of the surface, possibly from the glue used to repair ? The first few pages are fragile at the leading edge and lacking a few small pieces; the remaining pages are age-toned and occasionally slightly marked or stained, certainly used but overall quite sound with no tears or loss. Later calf with simple gilt decorated line, with some cracking and wear, fairly recently re-backed with a new calf spine, blind-stamped. Front and rear hinges cracked, but no weakness. The front endpaper has a tiny neat inscription dated 1917, and also the heraldic bookplate of Lady Violet Beaumont. Very good complete copy of Hermann Köhler's celebrated German study of medicinal botanyWith 283 dynamic botanical chromolithographs mainly signed W.M. (Walther Otto Muller), with others by Carl Friedrich Schmidt and K. or E. Gunther. The botanical plates are justly famous for their attractive design, with all parts of the flower, leaf, branch, fruit and seed displayed over the entire plate.This monumental German herbal was written principally by Hermann Adolph Köhler, edited after his death by Gustav Pabst, and published by Franz Eugen Köhler from 1887-1890. Complete with hand-coloured title and 20 hand-coloured botanical plates, all finely lithographed by Dean and Monday of 40 Threadneedle Street, London.
All plates drawn by talented and mysterious botanical artist E.E. Gleadall.
The flowers include exotic camellias, rhododendron, lady's slipper orchid, passionflower, coral tree, tiger lily, flowering cactus and waterlilies, as well as roses, geraniums, daffodils, pansies and heather.
Miss Eliza Eve Gleadall (1806-1887) was headmistress of the ladies seminary at Heath Old Hall near Wakefield. Here she taught English grammar, French, Italian, music, history, geography, and botanical illustration. She married Benjamin Williamson of Leeds in 1838 and retired from teaching and botanical art to bring up her seven children.
