Rare books from Givens Books

Limerick, ME: Office of the Morning Star, 1831 Book. Good. Full-Leather. Good with rubbed extremities of boards & corners; age-tanning to pages and moderate foxing; front epp missing (first page is title page) po notes on ffep; text & binding is tight. Early account of report on Book of Mormon relating to visit to David Whitmer house (one of the "three witnesses").

Paris: Alphonse Lemerre, 1909 Book. Very Good. Half-Leather. 1st Edition. scarce work by little-known poet. Leather spine over marbled boards. Light rubbing to edges of leather, more so to corners & edges of boards, tiny chip missing from top of spine. 5 raised bands to spine and gilt title and flower decorations, TEG, marbled epps, ribbon marker still attached. Library bookplate to fep, small stamp to bottom of title page and closed bottom edge, old p.o. signature, o/w clean throughout. Pages just barely browned, binding secure, overall an attractive copy. Text in French.

Amsterdam: Thomas Lombrail, 1707 Book. Very Good. 3/4 Leather. Contemporary rebinding of 3/4 leather in excellent condition; beautiful rebinding job. Minor rubbing to corners, o/w FINE. Marbled endpapers, 14 steel engravings, foldout chart, light foxing.

St. Paul's Church-yard, London: Printed by G.Croom, for Joseph Watts at the Angel, 1692 Book. Fair. Full-Leather. Fair full- leather with rubbed edges, chipping at top of spine, 1" split at bottom of front hinge; prior owner bookplate on fep; epp are age-tanned; text is clean & tight; nice copy overall but exterior is only fair.

Philadelphia: Self-Published, 1886 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Very Good with gilt lettering and decor on front board and spine; embossed design on corners of boards. Corners slightly bumped and rubbed; spine ends rubbed and slightly frayed; spine slightly mottled. PO signature on ffep; text block clean and tight.

Scarce. Cross Publications, 1945. Presumed 1st edition. Book Condition: Fair. Front cover hinge weak, see photos. Pages are all intact. Pages clean. Cover has some wear, at corners and edges, but mostly on spine, where some areas are coming away. "This book belongs to..." sticker inside copyright page, with prior owner's name.

2nd American edition. 8th impression. 1,000 copies of this impression were sent from Allen & Unwin to Houghton Mifflin. Dust jacket states 8th impression, book is confirmed the same by the clipped 'e' in 'the' on page 20, line 6. Book is in Very Good condition, with joints showing signs of weakness. Some very light foxing on map endpapers. Some light yellowing of text pages, but otherwise clean and tight. Cover has most minimal wear.Dust jacket is in Good condition, with some edgewear, small open tears at corners, top of jacket spine has 1/4" high open tear. Dust jacket flaps have moderate foxing.

Book is a Binding Copy, with all text pages present. Cover boards are present, and worn, cover spine is absent. Title pages to page A (Advertisement) 2 are attached to the front cover board. Pages A (Advertisement) 3-128 are together. Page 129- end are attached to the rear cover board. Pages are yellowed from age, and have some edge chipping and closed tears, but are very readable.

Scarce. Oblong album binding. Black cloth boards with screw fasteners at spine. 60 gelatin silver prints, 8" x 10.25" mounted on beige pages with printed captions.Introduction written "by M. Charles Preston, New York City, ex-enlisted man, former CBI'er and co-worker with the author on Phoenix Magazine in Calcutta, India". Photos taken by Clyde Waddell, "who was Chief Photographer for the Houston Press before entering the army, was flown to the India-Burma Theater in November 1943...". Waddell acted as personal press photographer for Supreme Commander Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten from 1943-1945. After that assignment, he resumed his work as a news photographer. The images for this book were captured by Waddell during his leave, "primarily at the behest of many friends who had been constantly asking him for photos of Calcutta scenes." Signed limited edition. Matching set, both volumes #1276 of 1500. Signed "Dwight D. Eisenhower" on tipped in blank following colophon page. Mandate for Change is copyright dated 1963 and stated Limited Edition, Waging Peace is copyright dated 1965 and stated First Edition.Both books are in Near Fine condition, with only visible fault some very light foxing beginning on top of page edges near spines of both volumes.Both slipcase corners lightly bumped/worn. Top of Mandate for Change slipcase has prior price ($50) in marker still visible under block of black marker, and one of the back corner edges was previously taped, tape no longer present, residue yellowed, light cracking of the corner seems to be what prompted the taping. Gift inscription on front endpaper of both volumes (see photos). Both volumes in original glassine jackets. Waging Peace jacket has very light spotting, but completely intact. First hardcover American edition and first combined American edition. Single line advert on the verso of the title page: "Journey to the Center of the Earth, $2.00". Original burgundy gilt stamped cloth cover.
Book is in Fair condition, with spine cover detatched at rear joint, fully attached at front joint. Significant edgewear to spine cover. Spine lightly cocked. Cover boards mostly worn at corners, some bumping. Top edge corner of front cover has some fraying of cloth along top ~1" of edge. Rear cover board has some staining.
Hinges starting. Prior owner bookplate pasted on front endpaper. Older looking prior owner signature in front endpapers.
Pages are intact, some areas weakening. Some spotting throughout. Some smudges, mostly on page edges. Text fully readable.

Stated: 1st printing, 1956.
Book is in Near Fine condition, with greatest flaw being the spine is lightly cocked. Some foxing at top cover edges. Pages clean and tight.
Dust jacket is in Near Fine condition, with minimal edgewear (now in Brodart dust jacket protector). Bit of foxing at jacket fore edges (mostly the front one) and a bit at the top of the rear jacket flap.

Stated First Edition. Inscribed by author on front endpaper: "This book is inscribed to my friend and associate - Russell Winfree with the cordial regards and best wishes of the author. Sincerely, Carter Glass - April 2/27".
Book is in Good condition, with front hinge starting, cracking between the last table of contents page and beginning of the introduction. All pages intact. Pages unmarked, bit of yellowing/light foxing in rear endpaper/pastedown. Some light foxing on page fore edges. Cover has minimal edgewear, some foxing present to edges, but hard to see against the navy boards.
Dust jacket is in Fair condition, with edgewear, chipping, open and closed tears (mostly at corners/spine ends). All four jacket flap corners trimmed (but price intact: $3.00). Soil mark on rear corner of jacket near spine. General fading/discoloration. Now in a Brodart dust jacket protector.
Carter Glass was born in Lynchburg, VA and was the Secretary of the Treasury under Woodrow Wilson.

Book is in Good condition, with very light edgewear to cover, two small wear spots on spine cover. Prior owner name written in ink on front endpaper, dated 20.4.15. Prior bookseller notes about the book being first edition written in pencil on front endpaper. Some yellowing to endpapers. Foxing to page edges and on faces of first 30 pages. Foxing also in end advertisements. Pages unmarked.

Book is in Very Good- condition, with spine very lightly cocked. Some wear to top edge corner of front endpaper, probably from very firm erasing. Some light bumping to cover corners, some discoloration to page extremities.
Dust jacket is in Good- condition, with some edgewear and chipping to cover, mostly at corners. Tanning to spine. Now in dust jacket protector.
