1985. TLS. 8.5 x 11 inch sheet, 20lb white stock. Dated "6 July 1985." Stafford writing to Louis McKee, the publisher of the literary magazine "The Axe Factory Review" apologizing profusely for his unintended duplicate submission. "I found to my horror that... "Listening to the Tide"... is alas at two places now... (and) the only thing to do was write this note in great haste, to minimize the damage..." Stafford goes on to explain his manuscript management, and how he could have made his mistake. Ends with "Humbly and guilty." Signed "Bill Stafford" in ink. Aprx two hundred and forty words. Folded twice for mailing, slight wrinkling at lower corner; otherwise, in Fine condition.. Signed by Author. Unbound. Fine/Not Issued.

While He Was In His Early 20S, He Traveled To Paris With His Friend Stanton Macdonald Wright, And Spent Several Years There Studying Art. Around The Time Of His Marriage In 1913, He Became Involved In The Nascent Film Industry In The Los Angeles Area And Was Involved In The Design And Construction Of Some Of The Earliest Studios There. 1945. Near Fine. 1 typed letter, signed by President Herbert Hoover, on his personal stationery. Thanking Mrs. Joseph W. Jones of Bristol, Tennessee, who had sent a $10 donation to the Boys' Clubs of America in response to Hoover's appeal in the organization's behalf. Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) served as the 31st president of the United States from 1929 to 1933. After leaving the presidency, he and his wife had lived at Palo Alto, California. Following her death in 1944 he relocated to New York City; the address on this letter is 420 Lexington Ave., NYC. In Near Fine Condition: two horizontal folds; light additional creasing; clean and solid.

1808. Very Good. 1 handwritten letter from the Duke of Montrose, dated 3 May 1808, London, responding to a request from Lt. Col. Simpson for scheduling the Eastern Battalion of Stirlingshire Volunteer Infantry for two weeks at Stirling. James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose (1755-1836), was a member of Parliament in 1780 and from 1784 to 1790 and is said to be responsible for the repeal of the act prohibiting the wearing of tartans in 1782. He was Master of the Horse from 1790 to 1795, and from 1807 to 1821, during which period this letter was written. In Very Good Condition: creasing; darkened along upper edge; light ink from another letter placed on top while damp.

Washington, D.C.: Office of the Vice President, 1953. Near Fine. 1 typed letter on Office of the Vice President letterhead with eagl watermark, signed by Richard Nixon, dated 7 July 1953. Nixon was sending forms to Bryan F. LaPlante, Chief, Washington Area Security Operations, Atomic Energy Commission, to obtain a "Q" clearance for Christian A. Herter, Jr., who was to join Nixon's staff. Bears stamp of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission in lower corner. Christian A. Herter, Jr. (1919-2007), had served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives until his father, Christian A. Herter, Sr., was elected governor in 1953. Later that year he became an aide to Vice President Richard Nixon, travelling to Asia with him. In the 1960s he joined Mobil Oil, becoming Vice President in 1967. In 1970, then President Nixon appointed him deputy assistant secretary of state for environmental and population affairs. Laid in are two 1946 autograph letters signed from the artist in Shiprock, New Mexico, where he created a series of 60 lithographs on the ceremonial dances of the Navaho, while residing on a Navaho reservation. Each letter is two pages - February 24, 1946 -Dear Gus; and November 19, in which he mentions a forthcoming book of his art with the text being written by John Collier, commissioner of Indian Affairs (later published as Patterns And Ceremonials Of The Indians Of The Southwest).
