Henri Mouhot rediscovered the ancient Khmer civilization for the Western world and was the first explorer of the nineteenth century to write engagingly about the ruined Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. He made his astonishing discoveries known in a journal of his travels which was recovered from
the forest near Luang Prabang in Laos where Muhout died in 1861 at the age of 35. This is the first complete reprint of his journal, introduced by Michael Smithies.
