Many of the histories written during this time concentrated heavily on actions around the coastal areas. Johnson covers that aspect; but almost half of the book details persons and events taking place in the upper part of South Carolina, particularly the districts of Fairfield, Chester, York, Spartanburg, Lancaster, Edgefield, Ninety-Six and Union--areas which saw some of the hardest-fought battles and skirmishes. Additionally, there is coverage of many events taking place over the borders in North Carolina and Georgia. Sketches of most of the famous men are included but there is numerous mention of other less famous men and their activities.
