A handsome first edition/first printing in Near Fine condition; This report summarizes the results of the Altar de Sacrificios excavations at Tres Zapotes, conducted by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in the 1970s. The site is a ceremonial center dating to the Late Formative period (c. 1200-700 BC). The excavations revealed a large, platform-style altar, measuring approximately 27 by 16 meters. The altar was oriented northwest-southeast, and was surrounded by an oval plaza with a diameter of approximately 10 meters. The central feature of the altar was a large, crescent-shaped stone sculpture, measuring 2.5 meters in height and 1.5 meters in width. A number of smaller, subsidiary sculptures were also found at the site. The altar was decorated with a variety of ceramic figurines and effigies, as well as with stelae and altars.
