by Neil E. Gillespie (Editor); John C. Harves

From the publisher

The ULTIMATE SOCCER DICTIONARY of American Terms is the largest and most complete soccer glossary ever published in the United States. Written by John Harves - successful collegiate player, coach, and experienced referee - this dictionary is the vital resource to help players, coaches, parents, fans, administrators, and journalists to learn American soccer terminology and current jargon and to better understand the game and the rules. Soccer is widely recognized as the most popular sport in the world - for players and fans. Soccer is one of the fastest-growing major sports in the United States, for both genders, at all levels - youth, collegiate, and professional. During the past 50 years, the number of soccer players in the U.S. has risen dramatically, from under 100,000 in 1967 to over 13 million today, with more than 25 million enthusiastic fans. More than 20 percent of all American households now include at least one soccer player or avid fan! For the benefit of everyone interested in the sport, The ULTIMATE SOCCER DICTIONARY includes definitions for over 4,000 soccer terms. In addition, this book also includes powerful training tools: (1) A "Quick-Start Guide" with more than 220 soccer words and phrases to help beginners learn basic soccer terminology; and, (2) An extensive set of more than 160 "On-field Oral Communication" terms for developing teamwork skills. The ULTIMATE SOCCER DICTIONARY of American Terms is available in a softbound edition (over 400 pages) and as a Kindle eBook. It is also available in two abridged Kindle eBook versions, "Basic" and "Condensed". What coaches and experts are saying about this book: "The Ultimate Soccer Dictionary is a great resource for all soccer fanatics, from those just being introduced to the game to the higher education coaches looking for an edge or angle in teaching all components of the game." - Marc Reeves, Men's Soccer Coach, Radford University, VA "The Ultimate Soccer Dictionary is a must for all youth coaches and parents who really want to learn the game." - John Sullivan, Recreation and All-Star Coach and former Soccer Club Manager and Referee "Crisp and authoritative." - Charlie Clark, Writer/Editor "Coach Harves introduces two new words to the American soccer vernacular: 'Shoulders' of the field, and Assistant Referee 'Lanes'." - Dr. Peter A. Keiller, Professor and former player, Howard Univ.

About the author

John Harves grew up in Arlington, Virginia, where he played organized soccer for the first time at Yorktown High School. He founded a member club of the Arlington Soccer Association and started coaching youth soccer before graduation. His first youth team was composed of both boys and girls ranging in age from 6- to 15-years old. He went on to Virginia Tech, where he played for four years. He was the student-athlete there who successfully led the initiative to get soccer changed from club to varsity status. He was then the Men's Varsity Soccer Assistant Coach at Virginia Tech for one season. During the summers and for three years after graduation from Tech, Coach Harves played for the Arlington Americans open team and helped found the Capital Soccer League of Washington, DC. In addition, he officiated for the Metropolitan Washington Soccer Referees Association and earned a United States Soccer Federation national coaching license. Also during this time, Coach Harves founded and directed the Arlington Soccer Association's youth referee program and their youth coaching instructional school. He is an inductee of the Arlington Soccer Hall of Fame. Coach Harves was subsequently appointed the Radford University (Virginia), Men's Varsity Soccer Coach. He won his opening game after only six days with the team. This team finished their season with Radford's first winning record at 8-7. In his second season, Coach Harves lead Radford to a 10-3-3 record, at one point going 13 straight games without a loss. In his third and final year, the team finished the season at 11-6-1 and enjoyed Radford's first post-season play. Also in his third year, Coach Harves was President of the Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association (VISA). After Radford, he returned to the Washington area and resumed playing for, and then managing, the Arlington Americans. Eight years later, he resumed coaching youth soccer with the Olney Boys and Girls Club and then Montgomery Soccer Incorporated (MSI) of Maryland. With the end of coaching youth soccer, Coach Harves has been presenting the information and experiences from his soccer career on his website, CoachingAmericanSoccer.com. During this time, Coach Harves was honored by his former college players with the establishment of the John Harves Soccer Scholarship fund at Radford University. Coach Harves is an active member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
