Ice to Fire Hardcover - 2005

by Marty Strauss

From the publisher

Ice to Fire is the fictional story of a native people struggling to meet the challenge of invaders to their homeland and their struggle to maintain their cultural identity. Ice to Fire is a two hundred year fictional history of a Native fishing village in Southeast Alaska. Topu, the village where the story takes place, is a fictional place based on many of the characteristics of native villages in the area. The story is a mixture of history, stories and folklore told to Marty Strauss while living and working in Alaska. Against the backdrop of Southeast Alaska Ice to Fire tells the story of a native people evolving as invaders from the south and Europe enter the area. Each new group brings changes and challenges for the village to consider and possibly adopt while struggling to maintain their culture and traditions. The story spans a time from just before the Russians arrive in Alaska to the latter part of the 20th Century. Although Topu is a fictional location, the story is based on interviews with elders and listening to their Native history as told through dance and stories.
