About the author

Mike Smith is a senior research fellow in the Centre for Historical Research at the National Museum of Australia. A distinguished archaeologist and museum curator, he pioneered research into the archaeology of arid central Australia. Paul Hesse is a senior lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney. He specializes in quaternary climate change and the impact of aeolian dust on the oceans and carbon cycle and the response of atmospheric circulation patterns to the glacial cycles.
