Novel that took 13 years in the crafting, and was published 15 times during his lifetime, each with his own revisions. Vladimir Korolenko (1853-1921) "threw fresh light on the complexity of the political, religious, and moral searchings of the Russian people and foresaw the profound changes imminent in social life at the turn of the century", from the Publsihers' introduction. The Author's Note to the Sixth Edition" is dated 1898. Korolenko had drawn his inspiration for this work from 3 sources: a girl who was a childhood friend, a pupil of his who was gradually losing his sight while a boy, and a mature man intellectually who was educated and a musician.
