Just a few and in poor condition are the remnants of the Middle Byzantine and the Paleologan monumental paintings in the islands of the Ionian Sea. The reason is earthquakes and misguided human interventions over the centuries. However, important wall-paintings still survive; among them: those of the important artistic centers of Saint Jason and Sosipater in Corfu; or of Leucas which are influenced by the western tradition; or of a group of humble churches in Corfu, whose decoration is directly related with the opposite Italian coast of Apulia. In the book is classified the decoration of all churches built between 750 and 1500 AD. The most monuments are located on the island of Corfu, less on Leucas, and a remarkable number on Cephallenia (but small and almost ruined).
