The northern route, running through the Central Asian and Chinese steppes, was the oldest of these links between East and West; while the peak of activity along the Silk Routes generally occurred in the Tang Dynasty, the prominence of the northern route was greatest in the Yuan, when Genghis Khan ruled vast swathes of Asian territory.
