LANSING, ROBERT. (1864-1928). United States secretary of state. Image Signed. ("Robert Lansing"). 1p. Folio. N.p., N.d. [Circa 1919?]. Original pen-and-ink bust drawing by French artist ROBERT KASTOR (1872-1936), inscribed "To France in the hour of triumph."
Lansing served as U.S. secretary of state from 1915-1920, arranged for the 1917 purchase of the Danish West Indies (Virgin Islands), and represented America at the Versailles Conference.
Lansing grew up near the U.S.-Canada border becoming an expert in international law and eventually advising the state department as an official counselor. In 1915, he assisted President Woodrow Wilson in crafting a reply to Germany's sinking of the Lusitania, and when Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan resigned to protest Wilson's aggressive response, Lansing was appointed to take his place. As secretary of state, he represented the U.S. at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference following the armistice that ended WWI; however, he fell out of Wilson's favor for his failure to commit to the president's desire for a League of Nations. Wilson suffered a debilitating stroke on October 2, 1919, and Lansing became the first cabinet member to suggest that the vice president assume presidential powers, leading First Lady Edith Wilson to insist on his resignation, which he tendered on February 13, 1920.

In addition to many b&w photos, included is information for visitors, organizational info about the observatory, its Chile station, its students, features it observed, acknowledgments. Condition notes: Staples rusted, but holding, moderate wear and scuffing but no tears to wrappers. No notes or highlighting. The observatory is on Mount Hamilton near San Jose, CA.
