About This Item
This is an antique, early "CATALOG OF HARVARD UNIVERSITY" - "List of the Academic Senate" in Latin. ("Catalogus Universitatis Harvardinae" - "Catalogus Senatus Academici"). 1809 (presumed 2nd edition, as I have found no other edition prior to 1808); W. Hilliard and W.W. Metcalf; Cambridge, MA. The catalog contains the names of the alumni from the graduating classes of 1640 to 1808 "who have performed duties and responsibilities and who have been awarded a laureate of any degree."
Included are notables such as John Hale (who was intimately involved in the Salem witchcraft delusion), Increase ("Crescentius") Mather (Clergyman in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, participant in the Salem witch trials, and first Harvard president) and his son Cotton Mather (minister of the Congregationalist Old North Meeting House of Boston and participant in the Salem witch trials), Artemas Ward (Revolutionary War major general), Charles ("Carolus") Bulfinch (first American-born architect to practice professionally), John Bartlett (co-founder of McLean Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, two of the first hospitals in the United States), and many more. Also included are the names of Presidents ("Praesides"), Associates ("Socii"), Harvardian ("Harvardianus"), Treasurers ("Thesaurarii"), Professors ("Professores"), Guardians ("Tutores"), and Academic Senate ("Senatus Academicus").
Condition:
Disbound - the book lacks its covers and end papers and begins with the half title page and ends at the Addenda page. Some pages are still attached along the spine. It appears to be complete, ending with the year of alumni ending with the class of 1808 (the book was printed in 1809, so it likely would not include the class of 1809). There are tears along the outer and bottom page edges; pieces missing at the corners and outer edges. The pages are generally clean with only some occasional light foxing, and a small stain at the outer edge of the first two pages. Overall in Poor condition due to the missing covers.
