New York, London: Interscience Publishers, 1959. Very Good EX-LIBRARY. A solid copy of the hardcover first edition of Serge Lang's second book. Bound in the original gray paper-covered boards. Light rubbing to the corners and spine ends. Square and reasonably tight. Inner hinges are perfect. WITHDRAWN stamp, and a few other library markings, including 2 spine labels (one removed leaving a superficial scar). Text pages are clean and crisp. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. This book covers topics not found in Mumford, e.g. the construction of the Picard variety, the Albanese variety, some formulas concerning numerical questions, the reciprocity law for correspondences and its application to Kummer theory, Chow's theory for the K/k-trace and image, etc. Number 7 in the INTERSCIENCE TRACTS IN PURE AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS series, L. Bers, R. Courant, and J. J. Stoker, editors. Serge Lang (1927-2005) was a French-born American mathematician and prolific author of mathematical texts. He taught at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Yale, etc. Lang received the 1960 Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Algebra. In 1999 the American Mathematical Society awarded him the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition. The citation for the Steele prize stated, "Lang's ALGEBRA changed the way graduate algebra is taught... It has affected all subsequent graduate-level algebra books." . First Published 1959 (so stated). Hardcover. Very Good EX-LIBRARY/No jacket. 8vo. xii, 256pp.
