He taught at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Yale, etc. Lang received the 1960 Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Algebra. In 1999 the American Mathematical Society awarded him the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition. The citation for the Steele prize stated, "Lang's ALGEBRA changed the way graduate algebra is taught...
