[viii]+441pp, [viii]+443-831pp, index & errata, marbled endpapers, spines gilt with 3 small worm holes at the base of the spine of volume I, engraved head & tail pieces, Ex Libris Edward Francis Witts with his armotial bookplate, occasional small burn mark, & scattered foxing, long quotation from Gibbon's Decline & Fall noting the fact that Gibbon thought this book was 'the best legal & constitutional history of any country that I know', leather a trifle rubbed, a near fine set. A tabular chronolgical history of the German Throne, which Pfeffel wrote in imitation of historian Charles-Jean-François Hénault work on French history, Hénault's 'Abrégé Chronologique de L'Histoire de France Jusqu'à la Mort de Louis XIV'. Christian Friedrich . Pfeffel von Kriegelstein [ 1726 - 1807 ] Alsatian historian, lawyer and diplomat. His is a distant ancestor of the Ex British PM, Boris Johnson. Francis Edward Witts [ 1783 - 1854 ] English clergyman, diarist, and magistrate who was rector of Upper Slaughter in Gloucestershire.

Modern hardbacks are described as being Cloth bound, even though predominantly they come in paper covered boards pressed to look like cloth. Book grades are given book then dustjacket (if any) Running from F - Fine, VG - Very Good, G - Good, P - Poor. A fine book will look almost like the day it was bought, a VG one will have some evidence of prior ownership, G means a nice clean copy, obviously secondhand & P implies a COMPLETE copy that has suffered a hard life & will need some TLC. We take into account the books age when grading, so a 250 year old book graded as VG will look more second hand that a 5 year old book graded the same. On the Net since 1998. All prices are in GBP.
