About This Item

New York: Theatre Arts Books. Good+. 1953. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [light bumping and a bit of wear at all corners, slight fading to spine cloth, some uneven fading to front cover, small puckered area at top right corner of front cover]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Redgrave on the title page: "With all good wishes / to George Quick -- / Michael Redgrave." In addition to this inscription, there are two note cards from Redgrave, both addressed to "George": (1) a typed note with "Dear George" handwritten above the typed message, which reads "Thank you so very much for your wire on opening night", and with an additional handwritten text reading "Hope all goes well / with your piece / Lots of good luck / Mike." (2) a handwritten note, affixed to the title page with yellowing tape, reading: "For George / with gratitude / from Michael. A Summer Tie[?] for / A Month in the Country / 4 April '56." AND there is a small envelope laid in at the front (formerly affixed to the front endpaper, but now loose), addressed to "J R Q / Boy Producer," and containing a small note card with handwritten message: "George - / After all, producers / should know what / actors think -- and / vice versa -- / Happy Birthday / Susie & Bob." (AND in blue ink at the top of the front endpaper is this: "Bob & Susie Pastene[?] / August 16, 1954." The text of the book, Redgrave explains in his Preface, "is that of the Rockefeller Foundation Lectures which I was asked to deliver in the Department of Drama at Bristol University during the session of 1952-53." The one-time owner/inscribee/giftee, George R. Quick, was the stage manager for a production of Turgenev's "A Month in the Country," directed by Redgrave at the Phoenix Theatre in New York in April 1956. (Redgrave did not appear in that production, although he had played the role of "Rakitin" in the Old Vic production during their 1949/1950 season.) Signed by Author .
