The comtesse de Genlis made her name as an educator, artist and writer. She challenged the ideas of Rousseau while adopting many of the same techniques, educating both girls and boys. A woman educating boys was, at the time, scandalous, and the other tutors quit in protest, but she carried on to great success. Despite the tragedy of the guillotine that befell her husband during the revolution, she was able to return to France with Napoleon himself as her benefactor.
