About This Item

London: Sampson Low, Son and Marston, 1866. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A very good, interesting copy in original blue cloth with gilt arms to front board and gilt title to spine. Re-spined with original cloth laid on. This copy owned by a contemporary of Broke, Michael Lane, who writes that he was a Midshipman in the Meleager at the time of the Shannon/Chesapeake action. a page is inserted in his hand commenting on the book and a further one on his own career in the Royal Navy, Lane also adds corrections in the text. This is the elusive original edition of this significant work on Philip Broke who captained the Shannon in the famous engagement with the Chesapeake. 488pp + illustrations + 8pp advertisements to rear. Bookplate of Andrew David, Lieutenant Commander Royal Navy to fep. Altogether a fascinating copy..
