About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1860 . Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5.5". None. An attractive copy of British explorer and travel writer George Ruxton's account of his travels in Mexico, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. First published in 1847, the year prior to Ruxton's death. He died in Missouri in 1848, prior to which he had been bedridden from a fall that occurred in the Rocky Mountains. After resigning his post in the British Army, Ruxton travelled through Mexico to the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Plains, providing a view of the westward expansion of the United States in the 1840s, during the period when the country's government was pursuing its policy of manifest destiny.Rebacked, retaining the original boards. Endpapers renewed.A very smart copy of this work from one of the first Englishmen to write in detail about the Rocky Mountains. Rebacked, retaining the original boards, with endpapers renewed. Externally, excellent, with a touch of fading to board perimeters. Internally, firmly bound. Light handling marks to title page. Pages lightly age toned to perimeters, otherwise generally clean and bright. Very Good Indeed
