Red coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with white, black and purple coloured titles to the front panel and white and purple coloured titles to the back strip. Chronicles a journey across Africa, undertaken, in Cloete's words, with "the desire to clarify our minds about the racial ferment of Africa". The journey is taken through South Africa, Rhodesia, Nigeria, Liberia, the Congo, Uganda and Kenya. Time Magazine's comment on the dust jacket notes: "There has been nothing quite so blunt said about Africa in years by a man who knows more about Black Africa than any other white man alive.". Softening of the back strip edges with rubbing of the book corners and lower book edges. Tanning and foxing of the text block edges with age toning of the pages. Pages 193 to 215 has a crease running their full length. Some foxing to the first few and last few pages of the book. The dustwrapper slightly worn and soiled, now protected, previous owner's inscription across half title page in biro. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 448 pages,.
