About This Item
Synopsis
This is a murder mystery-cum-spy novel unusually told through letters written by a young American in London to a lovely Texan girl he has only seen once. Having communicated with her through the "agony column" - that is, the personal ads - in the Daily Mail, he sets out to win her regard through his letters - but is soon writing to her about his involvement with a murder case. Throughout the book there are intimations that Europe is mobilizing, and the book ends with the departure of the Americans on a crowded ship as England stands on the brink of the First World War.
