A tight, handsome and scarce first edition of this volume in series editor Virgil B. Heltzel's "Northwestern University Studies" series, #7 in their "Social Sciences Series." Choice author inscription and signature in blue ballpoint on front flyleaf "For Cyril D. Sacks / with the good wishes of / Leland H. Carlson / I certainly appreciate May 13, 1959, / and the Man of the Year Award / Thanks for all your help." Carlson (1908-95) was a history professor and president of Rockford College at this time; other than this noted study of the Alaskan gold rush, he is known for his writings on Elizabethan and Stuart Puritanism in England.
