New York; The Limited Editions Club. 1932 and 1935. 8vo.; 2 volumes; bound in publisher's red and blue leather, respectively, with all boards and spines elaborately and extravagantly blocked in gilt, all edges gilt, Wonderland complete with the remains of the original glassine wrapper; both books preserved in original decorated cloth-covered slipcases in blue and red respectively; pp. [viii], v-xi + [v], 3-182 + [iii]; [vii], viii-xii + [x], [3] + 211 + [vi]; both volumes with the original engraved illustrations throughout, after Tenniel's original woodblock engravings by Frederic Warde and Bruno Rollitz; both bright and attractive copies; Wonderland with slim chipping to leather at spine ends and light surface abrasion to top edges and corner tips, internally fresh throughout; Looking-Glass in exceptionally good, fine, condition, both externally and internally, with only one tiny rub to one forecorner; both books protected by original slipcases; Wonderland slipcase with some edge wear, tanning to spine, and overall marking; scarce as a pair, both signed. First editions thus, limited to only 1500 numbered copies, published for the members of the Limited Editions Club of New York, unusually both books signed in ink by the real Alice in Wonderland, Alice Hargreaves (née Liddell). Reportedly only about 1,000 copies of this title were signed, a few years before her death.
