About This Item
Northport: Geo. R. B. Michie & Co., Publishers, 1899. Hardcover. viii, 912p., "in binding;" full calf boards with cloth hinges as issued, raised bands, red and black labels gilt, ruled and paneled in blind. The lower black-dyed label is faintly scuffed, there is mildest edgewear, but whereas "legal calf" is often acidic and easily turns fragile, this example is neither acidic nor fragile. In fact this volume is in splendid glowing condition (just now treated with archival-grade leather dressing) its titling bright and unflaked. CONTENTS : Master-and-servant issues (as in the killing of a section foreman by his employer's engine while decedent was attempting --as it was his duty to do-- to lift a hand car, &c &c), various kinds of accidents, street railway problems (especially "abutters," these being perhaps NIMBYs and eminent domain), injury to property --vibration; fences; injuries to children; deaths by wrongful act. EXTERNALLY, the binder chose a well-tanned hide that will last for centuries --it is already into its second century. BACKGROUND FOR WRITERS OF FICTION ..awkwardly narrative, but interesting, as in the following : "The conductor appeared to be mad, and his tone of voice in replying to appellee was harsh. The evidence tended to show that the walk of appellee upon the railway track from the point where he was put off into Moody fatigued him. and that he was humiliated by the conduct of the conductor. The real ticket agent at Moody was not Edgar Brown.." p.159, to be continued.
