About This Item
Moriya Jinpachi, 1861. Approximately 9.5x14.25 inch woodblock print, the right panel of a triptych. There has been debate about the vehicle depicted - was it a train, as the caption would seem to indicate, or a steamship, as it appears in the full three-panel image? Given that the steam-powered locomotive had not yet made its way to Japan (except for a miniature version brought by Perry), this may be the artist's conception of an enormously oversized train, based on his observations of ships at the port of Yokohama. The upper left corner has been restored, otherwise very good. Ichikawa Yoshikazu produced many prints depicting foreigners, a popular theme at this time.
