Tokyo: Bungei Shunju, 1978. 278p., very good hardcover in a sun-faded and slightly shelfworn dustjacket. Gift inscription on front endpaper. Text in Japanese. Biography of Yamada Waka, who was kidnapped and sent from Japan to Seattle to work at a brothel in 1897. After escape and conversion to Christianity in San Francisco, she became a well-known women's rights activist. An English translation was published as "The story of Yamada Waka: from prostitute to feminist pioneer.
