About This Item

The economic status of the United States in 1842 was presented in this copy of the Annual Address delivered before the Board of Trade of the City of Pittsburgh, on 24th January, 1842 by A. W. Loomis, Esq. The address is contained in a 35 page booklet measuring approximately 6 x 9 inches. The booklet was published in 1842 by order of the Pittsburgh's Board of Trade and printed by A. Jaynes as a limited edition of 1,000 copies for circulation. The pages of the booklet are lightly tanned but have foxing. The text, however, is clear and easily read. The cover of the booklet is missing. The overall condition of the booklet is good.

The illustrations accompanying this description show the booklet's title page, the communications between the Board and Mr. Loomis regarding this address, the first page of the address, and a typical 2-page spread of the address' text.

Andrew Williams Loomis (June 27, 1797 – August 24, 1873) was born in Lebanon, Connecticut. He earned his law degree from Union College, Schenectady, New York in 1819. He was admitted to the bar, and moved to Canton, Ohio to practice law. He then moved to New Lisbon (now Lisbon), Ohio. He served as delegate to the National-Republican State convention in 1827 and 1828. Loomis was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress and served from March 4, 1837, until October 20, 1837, when he resigned. He then relocated to Pittsburgh, PA in 1839, and resumed his legal practice. He served as member of the Peace Conference of 1861 held in Washington, D.C., in an effort to devise means to prevent the impending war. [Wikipedia]

About Pages For Sages

Pages For Sages has been in the business of buying and selling rare and used books, ephemera, and other unusual items for over forty years. We have long depended on book fairs, printed catalogs, auctions, and the like to support the business. Now, in our later years (ages 90 and 92) we are taking this step to display a catalog of inventory on the Biblio web site for your consideration. The number of our listings will grow as we continue the process of adding items from our inventory - please come back from time to time to find additional offerings.
