About This Item
New York: E.P. Dutton, 1915. First American edition, 8vo, pp. 382, [1]; frontispiece portrait, 3 folding maps, 148 photographic illustrations on 96 plates; spine slightly faded else a near fine copy in original pictorial blue cloth stamped in silver on upper cover and spine, t.e.g. The English edition was published in the preceding year but because many copies were destroyed in a publisher's warehouse fire, it is difficult to obtain. "This volume contains the story of the six-man Northern Party of Scott's Terra Nova expedition (1910-1913). Priestly based his narrative on his diary, faithfully written up every day for the two years the party was separate from the main party. The account of the second winter in the snow cave at Inexpresssible Island is an Antarctic classic: necessity forced ingenious solutions to the most basic of human survival and emotional needs" (Rosove). Rosove 256.A2; Spence 940.
