About This Item

2016. Paperback. NF. Unbroken spine. Likely unread.. Glossy, color-illus. wraps with white lettering on crimson spine. French flaps. 324 pp. with more than 450 illustrations in color. Text in Italian. A beautiful catalogue of exquisite textiles. = "The long and fascinating history of Jewish Rome is narrated by objects and documents kept in the Jewish Museum of Rome, housed in the monumental complex of the Temple of Major. The museum boasts an impressive collection of silverware and other decorative works of art dating from the 16th-19th centuries from the Five Scole (synagogues) of the ghetto. Of these there are about 900 fabrics. Precious textile furnishings, made of secondhand fabrics due to the Jews' interdictions, and packaged for liturgical use with the special purpose of embellishing and preserving the most expensive object of the temple: Sefer Torà (the scroll Of Torah). The museum retains splendid parrots for the Holy Ark, bands for wrapping the Torah rolls and coats (meilim) to cover them. Among these is the collection of about two hundred mappots, the long fabrics that protect the Sefer Torah; Embroidered envelopes with lavish embroideries with family coats, Jewish inscriptions, and suggestive images such as the delivery of the Laws of the Law on Mount Sinai, the Seven Fruits of the Land of Israel, the tortilla columns of the Temple of Solomon and other symbols of Jewish tradition. Their inscriptions, a true textile archive, are a lovely window on the world of the ghetto and its inhabitants. The many aspects of each of their donations are told with plenty of details, sometimes with poetic inspiration, and include the names of protagonists and their families, the relationships of love, affection and friendship, synagogues, and the year of consecration. The catalog of maps in the Jewish Museum of Rome allows you to immerse yourself in the history of fabrics and to know one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Western world.
