Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1928. First edition. leather_bound. Full crimson morocco. Teg. Fine. 10 Vols. 22 x 15 cm. Limited edition, copy 17 of 245 with a 57 line manuscript page from the author's McTeague inserted in Vol. I with hand corrections and notations. Original ink smears and fingerprints of Norris. Introductions by H.L. Mencken, Theordore Drieser and Charles Norris. Written in the naturalist genre akin to Stephen Crane and Theodore Drieser his work initially was highly praised. Contemporary critics have condemned his anti-Semitic portraits and his contempt for the working poor and immigrants. Photogravure portrait frontispiece in first volume by Arnold Genthe. Full crimson morocco, raised bands, spine panels richly gilt in floral motifs and covers similarly decorated with gilt arabesques at corners. Gilt dentelles, crushed green levant doublures with gilt borders and silk moire front endpapers further enhance the set. A few tiny spots of joint rubbing. BAL 15049, 15048.
